This Audi is of the 1984 vintage. This was the first year that Audi made their now-infamous quattro drivetrain available on their US-bound 4000-series sedan. The first quattro to hit the market was in 1982, though available only in the European markets as the Audi 80 quattro. Check out Audi's history web site to learn more.
